Ganderbal,June 6: The residents of Benihama and its adjacent areas in Lar tehsil of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Monday staged protests and blocked the Srinagar-Leh highway at Benhama against non-availability of drinking water.
Chanting anti-PHE slogans, the protesters demanded supply of pure drinking water to their localities, which they said has been stopped over a week ago.
The holy month of Ramadhan is starting in a day or two, It is strange that we are being forced to come on roads to press our demand,” said a protester.
Later, the protesters dispersed off peacefully after officials assured them to look into their grievance.
Meanwhile, traders, residents and hoteliers in Sonamarg alleged that there was a shortage of drinking water in the health resort.
Gul Mohd War, Chairman Beopar Mandal Sonamarg told Greater Kashmir that the non availability of drinking water in the area has added to the sufferings of tourists and locals alike.
“Nobody is paying heed towards this problem. We want immediate restoration of drinking water supply,” he said.
