Alarming: With over 30 K cases in 2022, J&K reports surge of 4 percent in crime

Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed an alarming rise in crime as the recently released National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report for the year 2022 exposes a 4.4% surge in reported cases.
The data, compiled from 2020 to 2022, reveals concerning trends in various categories. Among the grim statistics are escalating crimes against women and economic offences.
The report released by the NCRB discloses a steady increase in total IPC (Indian Penal Code) and SLL(Special and Local Laws) crimes in Jammu and Kashmir over the past three years.
In 2020, the Jammu and Kashmir reported 28,911 cases, which climbed to 31,675 in 2021, and slightly reduced to 30,197 in 2022.
This surge corresponds to a 4.4% increase in reported incidents, underscoring the need for comprehensive strategies to address the rising tide of criminal activities in the region.
Crime against women in the region has also witnessed a troubling trajectory, with 3,716 cases reported in 2022 compared to 3,405 in 2020. The rate of total crime against women in 2022 stands at 65.4, and the chargesheeting rate is reported at 68.6.
Simultaneously, murder cases have seen a notable decline, dropping from 149 in 2020 to 99 in 2022. However, the rate of murder remains a concern at 1.7, with a chargesheeting rate of 80.0.
Beyond crimes against women and murders, the report highlights crimes against children have seen a steady increase from 606 in 2020 to 920 in 2022, with a chargesheeting rate of 48.7.
Additionally, the report delves into the rise in crimes committed by juveniles, witnessing a jump from 171 in 2020 to 361 in 2022 and crimes against senior citizens have also seen a sharp rise, increasing from 5 in 2020 to 118 in 2022, with a chargesheeting rate of 73.7.
Economic offenses, including fraud and financial crimes, have surged from 611 cases in 2020 to 976 in 2022, with a chargesheeting rate of 61.9.
The report also outlines a rise in cases related to the Prevention of Corruption Act, reaching 128 in 2022. Cybercrimes have seen an increase from 120 cases in 2020 to 173 in 2022, raising concerns about the need for enhanced cybersecurity measures.
Offenses against the state have also seen an uptick, with 417 cases reported in 2022 and a chargesheeting rate of 85.4, indicating potential threats to public order and security.
The report also reveal that 821 children were reported missing in 2022 including 338 boys and 502 girls, emphasizing the urgent need for robust measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the region's youth.
