SRINAGAR: In a significant political shift, former minister Usman Majid has distanced himself from the Altaf Bukhari-led Apni Party over the past week, signaling his likely departure.
Usman Majid, a founding member and Vice President of the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party, played a crucial role in its establishment in March 2021. Prior to joining the Apni Party, Majid served in the Congress party and represented Bandipora as an MLA from 2002 to 2008.
The initial signs of his departure emerged through changes in his social media profiles, where references to the Apni Party were conspicuously removed from platforms like X and Facebook. This shift was further underscored by several press releases issued by Majid’s office. Notably, titles like “Political Workers from Different Political Parties Join Forces with Former Minister Usman Majid in Bandipora” omitted any mention of the Apni Party, hinting at his imminent exit.
A press release dated July 18 titled “Grant Age Relaxation, Reduce Fees: Usman Majid” referred to him as the Former Minister and Ex-MLA Bandipora, further suggesting his move away from the Apni Party.
Sources informed The News Now that discussions have been ongoing between Usman Majid and the Congress high command over the past weeks, indicating a probable reunion with his former party. If Majid rejoins Congress, it will be alongside associates like Imtiyaz Parray from the Sonawari assembly segment. This potential return to Congress represents a significant setback for the Apni Party, founded by Altaf Bukhari, a former minister in the PDP-BJP government.
Sources suggest that Usman Majid may formally join Congress in the coming weeks, marking a notable realignment in Jammu and Kashmir's political landscape.
