395 people encroached on 1459 Kanal Waqf land in Jammu: RTI
Says no land encroached, occupied illegally in Kashmir

SRINAGAR: In four areas of Jammu, as many as 1459 Kanal of Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board have been encroached on.
The Waqf land has been encroached on by 395 people in Jammu, Bishnah, R.S Pura, and Akhnoor. The Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board revealed the details in reply to the RTI application filed by social activist MM Shuja under the RTI Act 2005.
As per the RTI, In Jammu, as many as 313 people have encroached on 616 Kanal and 9 Marla of Waqf land, including houses, shops, agriculture purposes, shamshanghat, etc.
In Bishnah, 24 people have encroached on 729 Kanal and 15 Marla of Waqf land, which includes room, shed, residential, agriculture, poultry shed, and residential sheds. In Aknoor, 31 people have encroached on 105 Kanal and 11 Marla of Waqf land, the RTI revealed.
In R.S Pura, 8 Marla and 7 Kanal of Waqf land have been encroached by 27 people, which include constructed tin sheds, it added.
It was further revealed that the Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board has over 78 employees in six years, including 69 in Jammu, one in Bishnah and Kathua, two in R.S Pura, and three in Kathua.
According to the RTI reply, Jammu and Kashmir has properties/assets of 15092 graveyards, 4931 mosques, 1816 shrines/taklas etc., 296 Eidgahs, 1093 buildings/houses, 2952 shops, 235 Madrasas/schools, and 4720 others making a total of 31135.
In another reply to RTI, Jammu and Kashmir informed out of 9058 Kanal properties in Kashmir, no land has been encroached on/occupied illegally so far. On the other hand, approximately 80 Kanal of Waqf Land was retrieved in Eidgah.
