After the India and Pakistan war in 1965, work on the rail service from Pathankot in Punjab to Jammu started in 1972, and the first train to Jammu started with the name of Srinagar Express, which now runs with the name of Jhelum Express, and since then the arrival of trains has increased manifold.
The railway project from Jammu to Udhampur was started in the year 1981, and its foundation stone was laid by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on April 14, 1983. Nearly 22 years later, on April 13, 2005, the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh flagged off the rail service to Udhampur, which is also the headquarters of the Army's Northern Command.
After this, various sections of local rail service were started from October 11, 2009, and on July 4, 2014, rail service was also started for Katra, the base camp of the Mata Vaishno Devi Temple, which was inaugurated by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.
