J&K unemployment rate at 4.4%, 60% worker population ratio: GoI

SRINAGAR: The Minister of State for Labour and Employment provided an update on the employment and unemployment statistics for Jammu and Kashmir on Monday.
According to the latest Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) reports, the unemployment rate in Jammu and Kashmir stands at 4.4% for the year 2022-23. Meanwhile, the Worker Population Ratio (WPR) in the Union Territory has shown a notable increase, reaching 60.7%.
The Minister of State for Labour and Employment was asked to provide the Lok Sabha with state-wise data on unemployment in the country at present.
Minister of State for Labour and Employment Sushri Shobha Karandlaje, in a reply, informed that data on Employment and Unemployment are collected through the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), which has been conducted by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) since 2017-18. The survey period is July to June every year.
As per the latest available Annual PLFS Reports, the estimated Unemployment Rate (UR) on usual status for persons of age 15 years and above was 4.2%, 4.1% and 3.2% during 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23. As far as Jammu and Kashmir is concerned, the e estimated Unemployment Rate (UR) on usual status for persons of age 15 years & above during 2022-23 in Jammu and Kashmir is 4.4, the minister said.
In an another question, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment was asked to provide the details of number of employment generated in public and private sectors in the country during 2023-24 and 2024-25 till date, sector-wise and year-wise and so on.
As per the latest available Annual PLFS Reports, the estimated Worker Population Ratio (WPR) indicating employment, including public and private sector on usual status for persons of age 15 years and above during the years are 52.6% in 2020-21, 52.9% in 2021-22 and 56.0% in 2022-23.
Sharing details of the Working Population Ratio for persons of age 15 years and above regarding Jammu and Kashmir, the minister informed that WRP in Union Territory was 55.5% in 2020-21, which increased to 58.1% in 2021-22 and 60.7% in 2022-23.
