Jammu: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh virtually dedicated 75 crucial infrastructure projects of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) to the nation, with 19 of these strategically important projects located in Jammu &Kashmir and 11 in Ladakh.
The projects, costing Rs 2,236 crore, include 22 roads, 51 bridges, and two other vital structures spread across 11 States and Union Territories, aimed at bolstering both defence and socio-economic progress.
Speaking from the Trishakti Corps Headquarters in Sukna, West Bengal, Rajnath Singh emphasized that these initiatives reflect the government's commitment to strengthening border infrastructure, especially in regions like Jammu & Kashmir.
He highlighted that such projects play a pivotal role in enhancing the country’s defence preparedness while contributing to the overall socio-economic development of border areas. He attributed the success of these projects to the government's broader vision of 'Viksit Bharat by 2047,' a development roadmap envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The projects in Jammu & Kashmir are part of the larger effort to enhance connectivity in difficult terrains, ensuring quicker mobility of both civilians and military personnel.
This includes vital roads and bridges in regions prone to harsh weather, where infrastructure development has long been a challenge.
Singh also lauded the BRO personnel for their determination in completing these projects on time despite the extreme difficulties posed by the rugged terrain and unpredictable weather. He noted that the BRO had already completed 111 infrastructure projects in 2024, totaling Rs 3,751 crore. This includes the landmark Sela Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh, inaugurated earlier by Prime Minister Modi.
Referring to the substantial increase in the BRO’s budget allocation to Rs 6,500 crore for 2024-25, Rajnath Singh expressed optimism that such funding would further boost not just strategic infrastructure but also the socio-economic conditions in the border areas, including Jammu & Kashmir.
The Raksha Mantri also remarked on the shift in the government’s approach to border infrastructure since 2014, stating that previous administrations had been hesitant, fearing the misuse of such projects by adversaries. He assured the public that border development is a top priority under the Modi-led government, crucial for both national security and the welfare of border communities.
The event was attended virtually by Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir Manoj Sinha, alongside other dignitaries from across the country.
