Srinagar: Minister of Food and Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Satish Sharma Tuesday indicated that the government in Jammu and Kashmir may consider increasing food rations in a phased manner, depending on the demand from the public in the region.
While speaking to The News Now, Sharma emphasized that the administration is committed to addressing the needs of Kashmir and Jammu and will follow Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's instructions to guide their efforts. He noted that any decision regarding ration increments will come after a thorough review and consultations with the public, employees, and officers to ensure that actions reflect the people's final wishes.
Ration distribution has long been a crucial part of the Public Distribution System (PDS) in Jammu and Kashmir, ensuring food security for economically vulnerable sections of society. Under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), Priority Households (PHH) receive 5 kilograms of food grains per person per month at subsidized rates. Additionally, the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY), targeting the poorest families, provides 35 kilograms of food grains per household per month, helping these families meet their basic nutritional needs.
Minister Sharma acknowledged these challenges, stating that the government is actively working to address them.
He highlighted that a departmental review is underway to identify problem areas and improve the ration distribution process.
"We are already addressing issues like leakages with dedicated teams conducting inquiries," he said, adding that strict action would be taken where necessary. He also assured that the government is committed to ensuring that any increase in rations will be carefully monitored to ensure the benefits reach those who need them most.
Sharma expressed optimism, saying, "It will take another five years to fix the destruction that has taken place over the past 10 years, but I remain hopeful, especially with the leadership we have in place."
He praised the efforts of the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister, who he believes are leading a strong team committed to bringing relief to the people. If necessary, Sharma added, the government would not hesitate to increase food rationing in phases to meet public demand.
