Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir is set to commemorate its Foundation Day for the second consecutive year as a Union Territory (UT). This day marks the transition of Jammu and Kashmir from a state to a UT following the revocation of its special status on August 5, 2019.
While the government has planned various functions and events to celebrate this occasion, prominent political parties, including the National Conference (NC) and Congress, have announced their decision to abstain from the celebrations, citing that the current status of Jammu and Kashmir is unconstitutional and unjust.
Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, held a meeting on Sunday to finalize preparations for the UT Foundation Day, emphasizing the government's commitment to organize events similar to those conducted last year. These include cultural functions and competitions aimed at fostering community engagement.
Despite the government’s enthusiasm, both NC and INC leaders have openly expressed their dissent. NC's chief spokesperson, Tanvir Sadiq, stated that no party members would attend the UT Foundation Day celebrations, reinforcing their stance that the bifurcation of the state was "illegal, unconstitutional, and immoral." Sadiq reiterated the party's demand for the restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir, arguing that this is essential for the region to regain its rightful status, comparable to other states in India.
Additionally, Sadiq highlighted the significance of the "Darbar move," a traditional practice of relocating the seat of power between Jammu and Srinagar bi-annually, which they plan to restore once statehood is reinstated.
Similarly, the President of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC), Tariq Hameed Karra, echoed the sentiments of the NC, emphasizing that the INC does not recognize Jammu and Kashmir's status as a Union Territory. He criticized the notion of celebrating what he perceives as an "arbitrary, unconstitutional, and undemocratic" change imposed upon the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
As the UT Foundation Day approaches, the contrasting views of the government and opposition parties highlight the ongoing political tensions surrounding the status of Jammu and Kashmir, with calls for dialogue and restoration of statehood continuing to resonate within the region.
