Says determining school schedules is our right, which was taken from us after 2019
SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Thursday said the Jammu and Kashmir assembly passed a resolution on the restoration of special status and showed the world what we seek and what we will ultimately achieve.
Addressing a gathering in his constituency Ganderbal, Omar said, “In the election, I kept saying we must raise our voice through the Assembly, sending a message that what happened to us on August 5, 2019, is unacceptable because it was done without our consent, our will, or our consultation".
He said that when this was not mentioned on the first day, some people began to accuse us, saying we had forgotten or deceived them. But we are not people who deceive. The difference is that we understand rules and laws and know how to bring matters to the Assembly.
We wanted a voice from the Assembly that even the central government could not ignore. Otherwise, we could have passed a resolution on the first day, only for it to end up in the trash bin. What would have been the benefit? Omar said we wanted a voice from the Assembly that would compel the center to engage with us, which the center could not overlook.
And that’s what happened when the Assembly raised its voice and passed a resolution, making it clear to the world what we seek and will ultimately achieve, Chief Minister said.
Omar further said that three days ago, when the Lieutenant Governor presented his address to the Assembly, he included the promises we made to you during the election—whether related to electricity, gas, rations, or education.
The LG included these issues in his address because we wanted you to know that these promises were not just for the election. In sha Allah, we will fulfill them and present the results before you. We are not people who make empty promises and forget, he said.
We made promises to you, and based on those promises, you gave us the mandate to govern here for five years. Inshallah, you will see that we will not waste even a single day over these five years. We will continue to work hard and serve you, Omar said.
Many things were said during the election; attempts were made to sway people, even some outsiders were brought into Ganderbal. But the people trusted me and upheld my honor. For that, I am deeply grateful. You may have wondered why it took me some time to come and thank you in person—I wanted to bring something meaningful rather than come empty-handed, as you might have questioned the purpose of my visit otherwise.
Today, I am here to lay the foundation stone. This is the beginning, so you know that electing me wasn’t a mistake; in fact, it will benefit Ganderbal. Since my tenure began, I haven’t held any public event or laid any foundation stone until now. I had already told Nasir that if I were to inaugurate something or give my first speech, it should be in my own constituency.
