New Delhi: In a strategic move to bolster security and curb infiltration attempts from across the Pakistan border, the Border Security Force (BSF) has deployed two additional battalions in the Jammu region. These battalions, comprising more than 2,000 personnel, have been assigned to strengthen the second line of defense behind the existing BSF deployments along the international border (IB) with Pakistan.
The newly deployed units, previously engaged in anti-Naxal operations in Odisha, were relocated to Jammu just before the onset of winter, a critical period when infiltration attempts from Pakistan are known to intensify due to the challenging terrain. These units have been positioned in the Samba area and other vulnerable spots across the Jammu region, including areas along the Punjab-Jammu boundary.
The BSF’s presence in the Jammu region, which spans 485 kilometers of the 2,289-km international border with Pakistan, is marked by dense forests, mountainous terrains, and an increase in cross-border terrorist activities. Security forces have also set up additional deployment points equipped with CCTV cameras to enhance surveillance and monitoring.
The deployment of these additional battalions comes in the wake of a surge in terrorist activities in the Jammu region, with incidents in areas such as Rajouri, Poonch, Reasi, Udhampur, Kathua, and Doda. These attacks have led to the loss of more than 40 lives, including 18 security personnel. The region’s vulnerability to infiltration is further compounded by cross-border tunnels, which are often exploited by terrorists to carry out attacks against civilians and security forces.
Along with the deployment of personnel, logistical arrangements are underway to ensure the proper accommodation and patrolling capabilities for the new units. Temporary and permanent bases are being set up to support the force’s operations in the region. The additional deployment reinforces the BSF’s commitment to securing the border and preventing further incursions in the volatile Jammu region.
