Jammu: Union minister Jitendra Singh on Thursday said Jammu will get a separate railway division as the railway ministry has accepted a proposal in this regard.
In a series of posts on X, Singh also said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is personally monitoring the progress of the railway infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir.
Modi is keen to reinforce the railway facility and railway administrative structure in Jammu, which is soon going to be an important railway junction when the Kashmir valley, for the first time, gets connected with the rest of the country through a rail network, Singh, the minister of state for personnel, said.
"Heartening news for #Jammu...Railways to set up exclusive Division Headquarter at Jammu...A delegation of Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, led by its President Sh Arun Gupta, met me with a proposal to set up the Railways Division headquarter at Jammu," he said in a post on the microblogging platform.
"The matter was taken up with Railways Minister Sh @AshwiniVaishnaw ji. I am glad to share the update that the Railway Ministry has accepted the proposal and initiated the process for the same," the Lok Sabha member from Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur added.
In its letter to the minister, the delegation said giving full-fledged divisional status to Jammu will not only streamline the running of trains but also open new avenues for creating employment opportunities for locals.
Jammu, a key pilgrimage town, is under the Firozpur division of the Northern Railway.
Meanwhile, BJP’s Leader of the Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, Sunil Sharma, hailed the Union government’s approval of a separate Railway Division in Jammu as a landmark decision.
Calling it a historic move, Sharma emphasized that this initiative by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government would significantly boost connectivity, streamline operations, and foster economic growth in the region.
“This is a historic decision that reflects the Union government’s vision and commitment to making Jammu a hub of development and infrastructure,” Sharma said.
“The creation of a separate Railway Division will improve passenger services, enhance infrastructure, and streamline railway operations. It will also create much-needed employment opportunities and significantly contribute to the local economy, accelerating the pace of growth in the region.”
Sharma expressed gratitude on behalf of the BJP, acknowledging the relentless efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, J&K BJP President Sat Sharma, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, and MP Jugal Kishore in bringing transformative projects to Jammu and Kashmir.
“All BJP legislators have wholeheartedly thanked the Union government for prioritizing the development needs of Jammu and Kashmir,” he added.
Discussing the broader impact of railway initiatives, Sharma highlighted the prestigious rail project that aims to connect Kashmir with the rest of the country.
“Very soon, the entire Union Territory will be linked to Kanyakumari, creating a seamless travel network across India,” Sharma said. “This connectivity will not only provide better travel options but also boost local trade, tourism, and generate jobs for unemployed youth.”
