‘Project aimed at creating modern urban infra while promoting tourism and economic activity’

Jammu: The Jammu Development Authority (JDA) has defended the Tawi Barrage and Riverfront projects at the National Green Tribunal (NGT) following allegations over environmental matters.
This case was filed following a report published on sandrp.in titled “Tawi Barrage & Riverfront Projects in Jammu Destroying River, Inviting Disaster”, which alleged severe ecological damage and heightened disaster risks due to the controversial projects.
In its submission to the NGT, the JDA refuted the allegations, presenting the Tawi Barrage and Riverfront Development Projects as essential initiatives aimed at Jammu’s urban transformation and economic growth. The authority emphasized that both projects were planned and executed in compliance with all regulatory frameworks, with a strong focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility.
The petition filed before the NGT and the accompanying report highlighted concerns that the Tawi Barrage and riverfront projects could disrupt the natural ecosystem of the Tawi River. These concerns included harm to aquatic habitats, obstruction of natural water flow, and an increased risk of flooding.
In its defense, the JDA assured the tribunal that extensive Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) were conducted prior to the project’s approval. It cited specific measures to mitigate potential risks, such as sediment management, flood control mechanisms, and habitat conservation programs to protect aquatic biodiversity. Furthermore, the JDA clarified that monitoring systems are in place to oversee environmental compliance throughout the project’s lifecycle.
Highlighting the broader benefits of the projects, the JDA described the Tawi Barrage and Riverfront initiatives as game-changers for Jammu. These developments are aimed at creating modern urban infrastructure while promoting tourism and economic activity.
The Tawi Barrage, according to the JDA, will facilitate water resource management by creating a controlled reservoir, while the riverfront project will offer recreational spaces and aesthetic improvements. The authority stressed that the projects align with Jammu’s vision of becoming a leading tourist destination while enhancing the quality of urban life for residents.
The JDA also emphasized its commitment to transparency and stakeholder engagement. In its response to the NGT, the authority highlighted consultations with environmental experts, public representatives, and independent auditors during the planning and implementation phases. It reiterated that the projects are being executed in strict adherence to national guidelines on disaster risk reduction and sustainable urban development.
Acknowledging the criticism often faced by large-scale infrastructure initiatives, the JDA defended its approach as one balancing developmental needs with environmental stewardship.
